Can Perception Halt the Regress of Justifications?

چکیده
§1. The justificatory question What makes it the case that a thinker has justification for a given belief? Call this the justificatory question. I will not attempt to define “justification.” I doubt that a noncircular definition is possible. Roughly speaking, one has justification for a belief just in case one is “epistemically licensed” in forming the belief. As Pryor puts it, “you have justification to believe P iff you are in a position where it would be epistemically appropriate for you to believe P” (2005, p. 181). Thus, I use “justification” in a broad sense that encompasses all epistemic warrant. Justification in this broad sense is widely instantiated by normal adults and even young children. 1

Epistemic and Dialectical Regress
Dialectical egalitarianism holds that every asserted proposition requires defence when challenged by an interlocutor. This view apparently generates a vicious “regress of justifications,” since an interlocutor can challenge the premises through which a speaker defends her original assertion, and so on ad infinitum. To halt the regress, dialectical foundationalists such as Adler, Brandom, Leite,...

Another scientific method can be applied to this empirical question, and so forth, occasioning an empirical regre...

متن کاملParadox and Relativism
Since the time of Plato, relativism has been attacked as a self-refuting theory. Today, there are two basic kinds of argument that are used to show that global relativism is logically incoherent: first, a direct descendent of the argument Plato uses against Protagoras, called the peritrope; and, second, a more recent argument that relativism leads to an infinite regress. Although some relativis...
